Heavy rain floods Gnanapuram in Vizag

The municipal authorities in Vizag are planning to set up a regulator at the Yerrigedda stormwater drain after witnessing the flooding at Gnanapuram, a low lying area in the city due to heavy rain.

Due to the heavy rain on Sunday, the stormwater drain has received a rise in water level and the water entered into the sewage drain. The water from the sewage drain started overflowing into Gnanapuram.

After going through the situation, the authorities have decided to build a regulator over the top of the stormwater drain. Two of the four sub drains would be closed while the regulator would be built on the other two. The authorities mentioned that the project would be completed by next year monsoon.

One fo the GVMC official said, “During inclement weather, the opening of the gates results in the sea water entering the drain as the high tide condition prevails.”
