Janmashtami Celebrations

Janmashtami or Krishanashtami is celebrated by the Krishna bhakths all over the world. This day celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is believed to be the 8th avatar of Lord Vishnu and was born in midnight amidst rain and thunder.  According to the Hindu calendar, Janmashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in Bhadrapad month or on ashtami of Krishnapaksha.

His birthday is observed with a lot of enthusiasm in Mathura where lakhs of devotees come to celebrate the festival. It is a two-day celebration, where, in the second day a ceremony called the “dahi handi” is done, to celebrate the mischievous nature of baby Krishna where he used to steal makhhan (butter) hanged from the ceiling in a matka or pot.

Vizag also celebrates this festival with fervor. Human pyramids are formed to break the dahi handi at various temples. Schools conduct fancy dress competitions where the students dressed up as Lord Krishna and Radha.

The Iskon Temple of Vizag conducts various activities to celebrate Janmashtami every year.
