“Beat Plastic Pollution” by Isha Foundation on World Environment Day

As part of World Environment Day 2018 celebrations, Sadhguru, Founder, Isha Foundation will be in conversation with Mr Erik Solheim, Executive Director, United Nations Environment and Dia Mirza, UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador for India in New Delhi at 7 am on 5th June. They will explore sustainable alternatives and urgent policy action to reduce excessive use of single-use plastic.

In regard to the same, under the theme of “Beat Plastic Pollution”, Isha volunteers and supporters will be gathering at RK beach, opp. Kali Temple at 7am to conduct a beach cleaning drive and to campaign using a biodegradable ‘Suffocation Mask’ to spread awareness about how single-use plastic is suffocating life on the planet.
Isha Foundation volunteers will undertake clean-up drives in over 250 locations globally and will also campaign for the urgent need to ban single-use plastic.

Many environmental activists are calling for a ban on plastics. However, the very properties that make plastic so dangerous – its durability and long lifespan – also make it a great asset. A material that will not die or be destroyed for five hundred years is valuable. We can reuse it almost endlessly. The problem is not plastic itself. The problem is using it irresponsibly.

A material that can be constantly recycled is a great help to ecology and the economy, especially when the human population is growing rapidly and our lifestyle demands are increasing exponentially. The solution is not to ban plastic, but to ensure that it is used responsibly and recycled properly.

World Environment Day is a UN Environment-led global event, the single largest celebration of our environment each year, which takes place on June 5 and is celebrated by thousands of communities worldwide.

Isha Foundation founded by Sadhguru, is a volunteer-run, international non-profit, human service organisation dedicated to cultivating human potential. Isha Foundation is operated by over 9 million volunteers from more than 250 city-based centres worldwide. The Foundation is headquartered at the Isha Yoga Center, set at the base of the Velliangiri Mountains in southern India, and at the Isha Institute of Inner-sciences on the spectacular Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee, USA. Isha Foundation, a vibrant spiritual movement, also implements several large-scale human service projects to support individual growth, revitalize the human spirit, rebuild communities, and restore the environment.

Ranked amongst the fifty most influential people in India, Sadhguru is a yogi, mystic, visionary and bestselling author. Sadhguru has been conferred the “Padma Vibhushan” by the Government of India in 2017, one of the highest annual civilian awards, accorded for exceptional and distinguished service.
