Six youngsters, who got lost while trekking on Simhachalam hills in Visakhapatnam, were traced and rescued by Indian Navy. The search operations involved Navy helicopters and lasted for three hours before the youngsters were traced on Sunday.
It has been learned that a group of 20 trekkers, all of them aged between 18 and 25 years, began the trek around 7 am on the abandoned hilltop connecting Venkojipalem and Simhachalam.
While 14 of the trekkers returned after two hours, six of them continued their journey. The six trekkers, however, lost their way and informed the same to their friends. The trekkers who returned midway informed their parents who took the matter to local MLA P. Vishnu Kumar Raju and the police who launched a search operation.
District collector Pravin Kumar requested the Navy to assist the search op with a helicopter.
As per a report in Deccan Chronicle, the Navy deployed a Chetak helicopter from INS Dega. The helicopter traced the trekkers within five minutes of getting airborne.
DCP (North Zone) Dr. Fakeerappa K. informed that while three of the trekkers were airlifted, the other three were rescued by a Greyhounds team.
