Vizag drenches in heavy downpour on Saturday morning

The weather has poured water on all our hopes of a grand Dussehra celebration in Vizag. On Friday, Vizag witnessed cloudy weather throughout the day, with light rainfall beginning in the evening and continuing till late at night. Due to this, most citizens had to call off their Dussehra celebration plans and celebrate this festival in a simple manner. However, places like RK Beach were crowded, with people coming out with their friends and families.

Early morning on Friday, however, a lot of vehicles were seen on city roads, with garlands around their necks. Dussehra is the Hindu festival where Puja is done of vehicles as well as other assets. In this regard, Dussehra 2021 was not a complete let-down. However, there weren’t many Dussehra/Durga Puja Pandals in the city.

On the next morning, things got progressively worse in Vizag as the city witnessed a burst of heavy downpour in the pre-noon hours. While the heavy rainfall didn’t last for long and was soon reduced to a slow drizzle, the roads of Vizag had felt the brunt of the downpour. Apart from the low-lying areas in the city, areas like Siripuram also suffered from water logging. Although, things quickly cleared up by noon and it was all bright and sunny again.

However, things didn’t get as bad as they had last month when Cyclone Gulab arrived at the city shores and wrecked havoc for the better part of a day. And when it began raining heavily on Saturday morning, rumours and false news started spreading on social media that another cyclone had hit Vizag. These rumours were soon struck down by Vizag Weatherman Mr. Sai Kiran Suri, who informed everyone that it was just a low-pressure area and not a cyclone of any kind.

This low-pressure area had hovered over the city from Friday night. While the low-pressure area has now moved on, light to moderate rainfall is expected throughout the rest of Saturday in Vizag.
