Visakha set to become ‘Maha’ Greater

The Andhra Pradesh government has issued an order increasing the number of wards of the 13 municipal corporations in the State.
The number of wards in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has been increased from the existing 98 to 120.
When the GVMC was formed in 2005, the city had 50 wards. The number went up to 72 when the areas on the outskirts were merged with the corporation. In 2017, the number of wards went up to 81, and subsequently, they were increased further to 98 in 2021.
Meanwhile, the term of the Mayor and corporators has  ended recently, and the corporation has come under the control of a special officer.
