Andhra Pradesh state government has cleared a proposal to direct the Godavari river water towards Visakhapatnam at the earliest at an estimated cost of Rs 1638 crore. Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (PLIS) is a similar proposal through which Godavari water is directed towards the Krishna delta.
The river water will be taken from the left bank of Godavari in two stages to fill up the Yeleru reservoir through Polavaram Project’s main left canal. It was recently reported that 90 percent of the right canal and 55 percent of the left canal work have been completed.
About 3500 cusecs of water will be diverted to Yeleru reservoir. The Polavaram project will provide 23.4 tmc ft of water to Vizag and generate power of 960 MW. Work has already begun on a Rs 4808.80 crore project and the tenders will be announced next month. 12 separate units of 80 MW capacity each will generate the power.
The thermal plant is stated to be the largest thermal power project in the state with the work set to complete in the next three years.
