Chennai and adjoining districts in north Tamil Nadu as well as south Andhra Pradesh coast will receive heavy to very heavy rain starting Sunday evening due to a severe cyclonic storm — Vardah – which is likely to make landfall on Monday evening .
At present Vardah is 390 Kilometres east of Nellore and 330 kilometers east of Chennai. It is moving with a speed of 20 kilometers per hour. While, some mandals in Nellore are expecting rainfall of 10-20 centimeters, some others are expecting rainfall of 6-10 centimeters. District administrations in the two states have made necessary arrangements.
Under its influence, gale winds with speed reaching 80 to 90 kmph would hit Andhra in Prakasam, Nellore and Tamil Nadu. Strong surface wings from north-easterly direction with speed reaching up to 50 to 60 kmph would be there along north coastal Andhra.

Moreover, Army, Navy, Air-force and Coast Guard have been alerted to be on standby for deployment as and when necessary. NDRF, SDRF, Fire and Rescue services department personnel are already pre-positioned and shall be immediately utilized wherever necessary for rescue and relief operations.
Andhra Pradesh chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, who cancelled his Gulf tour in the wake of cyclone threat, held a teleconference with the officials from coastal districts and asked them to be on high alert. He has asked the electricity department to gear up to restore power supply within hours, in the event of breakdown of power supply.Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam held a review meeting with the state disaster management authority and put the administrators in the coastal districts on high alert.
