Montha effect: rain continues to lash Vizag

Though the cyclone Montha crossed the coast on 28 October, intermittent rain has continued to lash Visakhapatnam since then under its influence, crippling normal life. As a result, drains overflow and low-lying areas face inundation in several parts of the city. Water bodies are full to their brink, and over 20 houses got partially or completely damaged in areas like Maharanipera, Gopalapatnam, Peda Gantyada, Padmanabham and Bheemunipatnam.

With the cyclone warning centre in Visakhapatnam forecasting heavy rainfall, the District Educational Officer issued orders declaring a holiday for all schools in the district on 29 October.

Restoration work in the city is in full swing with the GVMC staff removing the fallen trees and the electricity department replacing the twisted poles.

According to Prithvitej, CMD of APEPDCL, power restoration work was taken up on a warfooting in the limits of the DISCOM. The loss has been estimated to be Rs. 10.47 crore.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who conducted an aerial survey in the cyclone-hit areas in the State, announced an ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. He directed officials to complete the distribution of essential commodities by 29 October.

In the district, MLAs and officials are supervising the relief and restoration works and distribution of essential commodities in the Montha cyclone affected areas in Vizag.
