Chandragiri station, near Tirupati, has been named as the “all-women railway station” by the South Central Railway (SCR) management. Ahead of the International women’s day, SCR General Manager Vinod Kumar Yadav handed over the responsibilities to a team of women on Tuesday to make Chandragiri, Guntakal division, the first such station in Andhra Pradesh, it has been reported. It has been learned that female employees working in Tirupati, Renigunta and Chittoor stations have been transferred to Chandragiri station for this purpose. Also, Begumpet in Hyderabad got the privileged status in Telangana on the same day.
Posts of the station master, booking clerk, health worker, points staff and sub-staff, and other technical positions at the station have been donned by female personnel. The officials said that the move was intended at empowering and encouraging women.
The station, however, is located at a remote location beyond Narasingapuram village. The station also falls short of being well connected to the main road and the highway. Lack of proper public transport and railway quarters are other major challenges faced here.
The authorities assured the staff that the station will soon be equipped with the necessary facilities and infrastructure.
