Andhra Pradesh Police has been deemed the best state police in terms of compliance with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) norms on investigation and chargesheeting of crimes against women and children. According to the Investigation Tracking System for Sexual Offences (ITSSO), AP Police has recorded a compliance rate of 93.8 percent. As per MHA norms, in any case of crimes against women and children, a chargesheet is to be filed within a stipulated time period of 60 days.
Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police, D Goutam Sawang IPS, applauded all police officers for doing speedy investigation of cases and bringing this distinction to AP Police. He also credited the Disha Police initiative of the Andhra Pradesh State Government for bolstering women’s safety in the state.
In order to ensure women’s safety in Visakhapatnam, Disha Police has taken up various initiatives, like awareness camps at colleges and schools, bandobast with static home guards along the 32-km Beach Road stretch, and patrolling of certain vulnerable areas in the city.
Furthermore, there is also a Disha Counselling Centre at Swarna Bharathi Indoor Stadium in the city where women can visit every Tuesday and Thursday, to report any grievances that they have. A panel, consisting of police officers, psychologists and officials from the AP Women & Children Welfare Department, hears all grievances. Disha Police also conducts drone surveillance of areas that are known for notorious activities.
The Disha SOS app by the AP Police has recorded more than 6.5 lakh downloads so far, out of which around 2 lakh are registered users.
