Visakhapatnam ranks third out of the survey conducted on 434 cities in the country. Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu announced today that Indore in Madya Pradesh is the cleanest city in India, followed by Bhopal in Madya Pradesh and Visakhapatnam ranking third.
The list of 25 cleanest cities of India was put together as a part of the Modi government’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, aka the Clean India Mission. The cities were ranked as part of the same based on 37 lakh votes cast.
Gonda in Uttar Pradesh was found the dirtiest and the New Delhi Municipal Council area slipped to seventh position. Visakhapatnam rose from fifth position to third this year, while Mysuru that topped the list last year dropped to fifth place this year.
Addressing the Swachh Survekshan 2017 function in New Delhi, Venkaiah Naidu praised Gujarat and added that it has done well this year. MP and Jharkhand were also found to have improved their cleanliness levels. He stated, “Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh are the movers and shakers of the ongoing drive.”
The criteria for ranking is based on attainability of infrastructure, hygiene via domestic and community toilets, and also dispensation of municipal hard leftover. This was the second edition of the survey conducted to map cleanliness in the country. Making the country clean by 2019 is the endgame for PM Modi via this mission. Andhra Pradesh contains multiple cities that scored well on the survey.
